Helena, MT – Transplant Tim Sheehy is facing renewed scrutiny for trying to represent Montana despite only recently moving here. This week the Washington ExaminerPOLITICO, and MSNBC reported on how Sheehy’s out-of-state ties have become an issue for him with Montana voters.

Sheehy moved to Montana less than a decade ago and bought a slew of luxury properties across the state – a serious vulnerability in a state where families are being priced out of their homes due to an influx of ultra wealthy newcomers.

Washington Examiner: Three Republicans who need to convince voters they’re hometown heroes

  • If Democrats can convince voters that the Republican candidate does not have strong enough ties to their respective state, it may help tip the balance in their favor and protect incumbents in what are sure to be some of the tightest races in 2024.

  • Democrats have nicknamed Sheehy “Transplant Tim,” hoping to peg him to voters as a newcomer to Montana, a state that often measures authenticity based on how long one’s family has lived there, per NBC News. The Montana Democratic Party also launched an ad last week framing Sheehy as an “out-of-state tech millionaire… playing cowboy.”

  • “In the end, I really don’t think it matters for me,” Tester, whose Montanadirt farm has been in his family for generations, told the outlet after Rosendale launched his campaign. “It’s either an out-of-stater that [Senate GOP Leader Mitch] McConnell’s picked or out-of-stater that McConnell hasn’t picked.”

  • Can Republicans shake the carpetbagger charge? Three GOP Senate candidates in key races are already facing Democratic attacks centered on not being closely tied to the states they’re seeking to represent.

  • In Montana, Tim Sheehy is being pegged by Democrats as an “out-of-state tech millionaire … playing cowboy” as he takes on incumbent Jon Tester.

MSNBC: How problematic is the Senate GOP’s ‘carpetbagger’ problem?
February 21, 2024
Steven Benen

  • In Montana, Democrats have been eager to remind locals that Republican Senate hopeful Tim Sheehy is relatively new to the state, having moved there from Minnesota.

  • In early January, The Washington Post reported that Christie Roberts, executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said she was watching the “amount of GOP Senate candidates who are just rich guys with tenuous connections to the states they are running in.”

  • Politico, looking ahead to the 2024 cycle, wrote last year, “A number of 2024 Senate candidates in competitive races have a carpetbagger problem,” and there’s ample evidence to bolster the point.
