NEW: Daines Votes Against Aid to Ukraine
The MT GOP Congressional Delegation has gone full ‘Putin Puppet’
Helena, MT – Last night, Montana’s junior Senator Steve Daines voted against sending aid to Ukraine, a democratic ally of the United States defending themselves against the Russian invasion. Despite his best efforts, the bill passed through the Senate and is on the way to the President’s desk to provide critical military aid to Ukraine, boost our national defense, and fund the federal government through the next fiscal year.
Daines joins his Republican colleague Representative Matt Rosendale in voting against sending aid to Ukraine, earning the Montana Republican delegation a reputation for looking the other way on Russian authoritarianism.
This is not the first time Daines has acted deferential to Putin’s regime. In a much maligned visit to Moscow on the Fourth of July, Daines and his cohort were expected to hold the regime accountable for meddling in American elections and the attack on Crimea. Instead, a member of the Russian delegation called the meeting “one of the easiest ones in my life.“
“Who benefits from leaving Ukraine out in the cold? Certainly not Ukraine, and certainly not Ukraine’s allies and fellow democracies,” says Sheila Hogan, executive director of the Montana Democratic Party. “Voting no on this bill is exactly what Putin wants and expects of his ‘allies’ in congress – Sen. Daines has once again put Putin over this country.”
