Helena, MT – Today in an op-ed and during Monday night’s U.S. Senate debate, Tim Sheehy lied about his public lands record once again, falsely claiming that “no one, including myself, in that organization, has ever advocated for selling our public lands.”

Sheehy clearly called to remove protections for our public lands: “Local control has to be returned. Whether that means, you know, some of these public lands get turned over to state agencies, or even counties, or whether those decisions are made by a local landlord instead of by, you know, federal fiat a few thousand miles away.”

Read some of the coverage holding Sheehy accountable for his lies about his public lands position:

  • HuffPost: “In defending himself, Sheehy falsely claimed that ‘no one, including myself, in that organization has ever advocated for selling our public lands ― never have, never will.’”

  • Daily Montanan: “Tester said Sheehy wanted to turn public lands over to counties and to his ‘rich friends’ so they could buy them. The Montana GOP platform for 2024 says that the party wants all federal lands to be relinquished back to the states.”

  • HuffPost: “Sheehy largely avoided engaging in the specifics of Tester’s attacks, instead continuing a muddled effort to rewrite his record on the issue [...] Sheehy has spent the past year doing damage control on this issue, claiming he opposes the sale or transfer of federal lands despite his own words to the contrary.”

  • Helena Independent Record: “Tester accused Sheehy of changing his stance on public lands, pointing to the Republican’s former position on the board of Property and Environment Research Center, or PERC. Sheehy didn't disclose his role on the board of directors in campaign filings, something his campaign later called an ‘oversight.’ [...] Democrats use Sheehy’s ties to the organization to say he’d support privatizing public lands, while Sheehy defended the group and his role Monday night. ‘The organization he's talking about advocated for better private management of our public land services organizations,’ Sheehy said.”
