Thank You, Citizens United: A Letter from Matt Rosendale to His Supporters…maybe

As this week marks the 8th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, we uncovered a (fake) thank you note from wealthy real estate developer Matt Rosendale.

Dearest Citizens United,

Happy 8th anniversary on winning Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission! Now, super PACs and dark money groups are allowed to spend unlimited amounts of money on elections – like mine for Senate – and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

As you know, I’ve praised this decision before – it’s great that corporations and dark money groups can spend as much money as they want, and boy, is it paying off! Special interests like Steve Bannon’s PAC, the Club for Growth, and the controversial Senate Conservatives Fund and more are already pledging to dump money into my race. People like John Bolton are supporting me, and he’s said he’s going to spend $25 million across the country.

I’m so glad you helped eliminate the law Montanans passed for themselves to ban political spending by corporations. If outsiders want to spend unlimited sums to buy our elections, Montanans should take a back seat.

As you know, I am opposed to limits on corporate spending. I voted against legislation that requires dark money groups to disclose their donors and campaign expenditures. Unfortunately, it passed.

But I think my efforts are paying off. I’m proud to have support from you, Citizen’s United, and can’t wait to see us working together. In fact, I like to think of you as the modern-day Copper Kings; they spent boatloads of cash to buy seats for their allies who would do their bidding, just like you!

I also have a perfect score with a group funded by the billionaire Koch Brothers, so I’m looking forward to them dumping a lot of their money into this race too.

Some may say I’m a proven puppet for dark money groups that threaten American democracy by allowing elections to be bought by corporations and anonymous donors; but I’m here to say, there is nothing wrong with big money in politics.

I’ve shown my unwavering support for you, voting against bipartisan campaign finance laws requiring anonymous dark money groups to disclose their donors, and I look forward to your support of me.

Here’s to 8 more years of rampant spending from outside groups and super PACs to meddle in our elections and disregard the interests of Montanans.

Loyally Yours,

Matt Rosendale
