On International Press Freedom Day, Greg Gianforte Continues to Write Off Violent Assault
Helena, MT – Yesterday, Montana Democrats were joined by people around the world in marking International Press Freedom Day, a day set aside to celebrate “the fundamental principles of press freedom” and “defend the media from attacks.”
Today, we are called upon to remember Congressman Greg Gianforte’s vicious assault against a journalist who had the audacity to ask Gianforte about his position on affordable health care (he opposes it). Gianforte then lied to the police, claiming he didn’t initiate the altercation, directly contradicting eyewitness accounts.
Almost 3 years later, Greg Gianforte still shows no remorse for the incident. During a recent radio interview, Greg Gianforte was asked how “the most infamous moment of his campaign… affected you personally and as a politician?” Gianforte’s response? “It doesn’t come up.”
“Montanans don’t lie to the police, and Montanans don’t attack journalists for asking questions. Greg Gianforte has done both – he is unfit to serve our state,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey.
