Daines’ Campaign Flush With Corporate PAC Money

MTN News: “The biggest single source of Daines’ campaign war-chest is from [PACs], most of which represent business interests”

Helena, MT – New reporting reveals that Steve Daines’ Senate campaign is fueled by special interests, many “representing various business interests.” This past quarter alone, Daines raked in $11,000 from Big Pharma, including Pfizer, Sunovion, Sanofi, and Merck, $2,500 from UnitedHealth, a health insurance company that profited from the 2017 Republican tax cuts, and $2,500 from Delta, which is expected to benefit from the coronavirus stimulus package.

From MTN News:

“Daines raised $1.3 million during the first three months of this year and has raised nearly $8 million for his campaign since taking office in 2015.  Of that money, at least 16.5 percent, or $1.32 million, is from Montana donors. However, the biggest single source of Daines’ campaign war-chest is from political-action committees, or PACs, most of which represent business interests. About $2.6 million, or one-third of Daines’ funds, has come from PACs.

[Daines’] records list more than 1,200 donations from PACs totaling $2.6 million, most of them representing various business interests. A few of the PACs are based in Montana, but the vast majority are national groups, many of which are headquartered in Washington, D.C.

Daines has been advocating for large corporations and special interests throughout his career in the Senate. In recent weeks, Daines voted for an amendment that would have capped unemployment benefits for out-of-work Montanans, while at the same time supporting a $500 billion corporate slush fund without adequate oversight. Daines and Senate Republicans even slipped a massive tax giveaway for millionaires into the must-pass legislation, but rural hospitals across the country and in Montana have struggled to stay afloat.

“Montanans have known for years that Daines is bought and paid for by large corporations and special interests — this most recent disclosure just shows more of the same,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “Daines is totally out of touch with Montana values — if he thinks he can buy Montanans’ votes, he’s got another thing coming.
