Despite claiming to have ‘unlocked’ public lands, Gianforte has a long record of locking them up

Helena, MT – Gianforte is trying to claim he “unlocked” more than a hundred thousand acres of public land, forgetting his real record of locking Montanans out of public land they’ve had access to for generations.

The problem is, much like Gianforte’s spin on his property tax hike, glossy campaign mailers like this are a lie:

“Governor Gianforte will never be able to erase his dangerous record of closing off access to public lands. He knows Montanans haven’t forgotten, and now he thinks he can outsmart them,” said Sheila Hogan, Executive Director of the Montana Democratic Party. “This is another lie from a politician who lied to police after assaulting someone, and who continues to lie to Montanans about his disastrous tax hike on Montana homeowners.”

Montanans are passionate about public lands and expect their elected officials to defend them.

Gianforte is Montana’s greatest threat to Montana’s public lands:

  • In 2009, Gianforte sued the people of Montana to block public access to the East Gallatin River near his mansion.

  • As a Congressman, Gianforte Gianforte introduced legislation to eliminate protections from nearly 800,000 acres of public lands – the largest conservation rollback in state history

  • Gianforte opposed fully funding the Land and Water Conservation Fund

  • He also openly opposed the President’s plan to preserve 30 percent of the nation’s lands and waters by 2030

  • Gianforte has used his time as governor to wage unprecedented attacks on wild spaces, including his recent veto of SB 442, which would have funneled $30 million in marajuana tax revenue into funds for conservation. 130 of 150 state legislators supported the bill.

  • He’s proven he isn’t afraid to use taxpayer dollars to defend his anti-public lands position. Conservation groups filed a lawsuit challenging the SB 442 veto, but Gianforte is fighting to have it dismissed.
