Taxes Are Due Today – And Republicans Want to Raise Yours

Republicans have a plan that could raise taxes on 35.1% of Montanans

Helena, MT – Today is Tax Day, and Republicans are going to talk about anything other than the fact that their tax plan could raise taxes on 35% of Montanans – including many child care workers, teachers, first responders, and other working people.

Meanwhile, Montana Democrats are working to cut families’ costs and make sure billionaires pay their fair share. During the 2021 session, Democrats fought the MTGOP every step of the way as they passed legislation that would help the top 10% of wealthy taxpayers, leaving 42% of hardworking Montana families with no tax relief. Rep. Emma Kerr-Carpenter (D- Billings) put forward a bill, HB 631, to increase the state earned income tax-credit to 10% from 3%. Sen. Jill Cohenour (D- East Helena) put forward a bipartisan bill that would provide an income tax credit to low- and middle-income Montanans to make sure that no one gets taxed out of their home. Both bills aiming to lower taxes on Montana families were killed by the MTGOP.

“Today is the last day for Montanans to file their taxes – and they deserve to know that if Republicans get their way, 35.1% of us could see our taxes go up,” said Montana Democratic Party executive director Sheila Hogan. “The contrast is clear: While the Democrats have cut taxes for working families and laid out a plan to lower costs, Republicans are running on an agenda that would force you to pay more. If the MTGOP gets their way, the only people who will be able to afford Montana are their out-of-state political donors.”
