REMINDER: Steve Daines Voted To Cap Unemployment Benefits as Montana Filings Hit 80,000
After Dishonestly Claiming Credit for Expanded Unemployment Benefits, Daines Now Calls Them Too “Generous”
Helena, MT – 80,000 Montanans have filed for unemployment insurance in the last six weeks, and a new report projects that unemployment in Montana will continue to rise through the end of the year, with job losses numbering over 50,000. Steve Daines voted to cap unemployment insurance for Montanans laid off due to the pandemic — but after Democrats succeeded in expanding benefits, Daines was repeatedly caught dishonestly bragging about the increased benefits, before abruptly changing his tune and calling them too “generous.”
As working Montana families continue to weather the economic shocks brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, Daines and Senate Republicans have apparently been more focused on securing massive tax giveaways for millionaires, and pushing for corporate slush funds without strong protections to prevent corporations from using federal aid funds to boost CEO bonuses or buy back stocks.
“Throughout this public health and economic crisis, Senator Daines’ priorities have been clear — critical relief for Montana working families is too ‘generous,’ but billions of dollars in corporate slush funds without sufficient oversight isn’t,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “Montanans deserve representatives that care about the problems they’re facing — Daines continues to fall short.
