Montana Republicans Voted Against Critical Funding for Higher Education

One year ago this week, every congressional Republican in MT voted against $121 million in American Rescue Plan funding for Montana colleges and universities to recover from the pandemic

Helena, MT – Ahead of Friday’s one year anniversary of President Joe Biden signing the American Rescue Plan into law, new data from the Department of Education shows that Montana received over $121 million for 27 colleges and universities– including $31 million for community colleges – in order to reopen their doors to in-person learning and get campuses back to normal operations following the pandemic – no thanks to a single Republican member of Montana’s congressional delegation, which unanimously voted against the relief law.
This represents one of the largest one-time investments in Montana’s colleges and universities.

According to the Department of Education, examples of key investments in Montana higher education from the American Rescue Plan include:

  • $31 million for community colleges

  • Over $34 million for 7 Tribal Colleges

  • $3 million for Montana State University – Northern, a Minority-Serving Institution (MSI)

“It is critical that we invest in Montana’s higher education system to set our students up for success,” said Montana Democratic Party Executive Director Sheila Hogan. “The Democrats’ American Rescue Plan delivers just that and, one year later, Montanans should remember that no Montana Republican voted for the American Rescue Plan that got our students back in the classroom – but that hasn’t stopped them from taking the dough.”
