Montana Democrats Urge Senator Daines to Confirm Congresswoman Deb Haaland
Montana Democrats Call for Deb Haaland Confirmation as the First Native American Cabinet Member
Helena, MT — The Montana Democratic Party and members of the Montana Democratic Tribal Committees today called on Senator Steve Daines to support the nomination of Congresswoman Deb Haaland for Secretary of the Interior. Congresswoman Haaland is eminently qualified to lead the Interior Department and will serve as a champion for our public lands and a strong ally for Native communities.
Congessswoman Haaland is the first Native American ever nominated to a cabinet position. Her nomination is historic and her record as a public servant is unprecedented. Congresswoman Haaland will protect our wildlife, preserve our public lands, and help restore and strengthen the relationship between Tribes and the federal government. Voting against her confirmation is a vote against Native communities. It’s also a vote against the interests of all Montanans who rely on our public lands and want to preserve the beauty of Montana for future generations.
“Congresswoman Haaland’s nomination is an important and historic step forward in U.S. relations with Tribal communities,” said Donavon Hawk, a member of the Crow Tribe.
“We urge Senator Daines to stand with Native Americans, with all Montanans, and with the tide of history in supporting the first Native American cabinet secretary,” said Shane Morigeau, a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe.
