Montana Democrats Urge Corey Stapleton to Set a Deadline for COVID-19 Response Plan

Helena, MT – The Montana Democratic Party today sent a letter to Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton calling on him to identify a deadline by which to announce any intended changes to the June 2 Primary election in the face of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

MDP is urging Stapleton to “give counties the ability to conduct elections entirely by mail ballot; establish secure drop box locations throughout communities so that Montanans can easily submit their mail ballots; allow more time for Montanans to submit their ballots; work with universities and colleges to protect the voting rights of students; and work with Tribal leadership to ensure Tribal Satellite Voting Locations have the resources they need to maximize voter participation in the communities they serve.”

“These are uncertain times, and Corey Stapleton has done nothing to reassure Montanans that our elections will proceed in a manner that both maximizes voter participation and protects public health,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “The Secretary of State’s primary responsibility is defending election integrity. Stapleton’s silence in response to the COVID-19 outbreak borders on negligence — he needs to announce his intentions immediately.”
