Helena, MT – The Montana Independent reports that the future of Montana’s record-high property taxes hinges on the Governor’s race this November, as Governor Greg Gainforte seeks reelection after raising property taxes to historic highs on working Montanans and their families.

The Montana Independent outlines Democratic candidate for governor Ryan Busse’s simple plan for providing immediate relief for Montana taxpayers: lowering the property tax rate for everyone from 1.35% to 0.94%.

The article explains how lowering the tax assessment rate to a revenue-neutral level is a practice both Democratic and Republican governors in Montana have done in the past to prevent property taxes from skyrocketing. Unlike his predecessors, Gianforte ignored his Department of Revenue’s advice to lower rates and opted to provide tax breaks to wealthy corporations, millionaires, and billionaires like himself.

“Governor Greg Gianforte has raised property taxes on working Montanans and their families by as much as 111 percent, making Montana even more expensive,” said Montana Democratic Party Executive Director Sheila Hogan. “Gianforte chose to give tax breaks to rich investors and corporations, pricing ordinary Montanans and seniors out of their homes. Folks from across the political spectrum know all Gianforte cares about is dollar signs, and are ready for a change this November.”
