Daines to Spend Final Weekend of Campaign Alongside Donald Trump Jr. Who Calls U.S. Deaths from the Coronavirus “Almost Nothing”
Helena, MT – On the final weekend of the campaign, Senator Steve Daines is choosing to campaign along Donald Trump Jr. – the latest dispatch from the national Republican Party to help shore up Daines’ sinking re-election campaign. This week, Trump Jr. carelessly downplayed the pandemic, saying that deaths from the coronavirus in the U.S. are “almost nothing” despite roughly 800 people in the country continuing to die from the disease every day.
Daines choosing to campaign with someone with such dangerous views about this devastating crisis comes as his campaign has repeatedly flouted public health guidance. This week, Daines held an event with Senator Ted Cruz with hundreds of people packed indoors – many not wearing masks. In September, Daines participated in a rally alongside Vice President Mike Pence where “few wore masks and few sat or stood 6 feet away from others” – choosing to ignore the Gallatin County Health Officer’s request “to plan ways to use coronavirus-related protocols.”
Time and time again, Daines makes clear that he is more interested in helping his re-election campaign than he is with protecting Montanans’ health.
“Steve Daines is choosing to close out his campaign with Donald Trump Jr., a man who is spreading reckless misinformation about the ongoing pandemic,” said MDP Communications Advisor Christina Wilkes. “It’s evident that Daines will stop at nothing to boost his campaign – even if he risks Montanans’ health and safety along the way.”
