Daines, Republicans Forced Massive Tax Break for the Wealthy into Must-Pass Coronavirus Legislation
Tax Change Will Overwhelmingly Benefit Those Earning More than $1 Million Annually
Daines Also Failing to Speak Out for Montana’s Rural Hospitals
Helena, MT – New reporting on the coronavirus response package reveals that Steve Daines and Senate Republicans forced a massive tax giveaway for millionaires into the coronavirus response package meant to help working families, hospitals, and small businesses. While Daines and Senate Republicans were adding a giveaway for their millionaire backers to the pandemic response bill, government-owned rural hospitals were shut out of the rescue package’s loan program, including a number of rural hospitals in Montana.
Daines has already come under fire for supporting a $500 billion corporate slush fund and voting to cap unemployment benefits for Montana workers — benefits that he has repeatedly been caught “bragging” about in spite of his opposition. As Montanans struggle to cope with the public health and economic impacts of the pandemic, Daines continues to put large corporations and his wealthy backers first.
“In a public health and economic emergency, Montanans expect our elected representatives to fight for them — not force awful personal political agendas into crucial legislation,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “Daines has always put his wealthy corporate backers over working Montanans — but jamming a massive tax giveaway for the wealthy into legislation meant to support working families in need is a new low.”
