Voters Signal They Are Sick of Gianforte and Zinke in Primary Election Results

Helena, MT – Montana’s best-known GOP incumbent leaders this election cycle, Governor Greg Gianforte and Congressman Ryan Zinke, underperformed in last week’s primary election, signaling both leaders are vulnerable and facing intense skepticism from conservative voters across Montana.

Both Gianforte and Zinke were able to secure only 75% of GOP votes in their races, meaning a staggering 25% of conservative voters chose other candidates over the incumbents.

According to data from the Montana Secretary of State, Gianforte received the lowest vote share for an incumbent Montana governor in at least 44 years. Ryan Zinke's campaign vastly outspent his opponent, Mary Todd, by nearly 50 to 1, yet Zinke could only secure a mere three-quarters of the vote share. 

“Not surprisingly, Montanans are voting against Greg Gianforte’s record-high property taxes, his out-of-control housing crisis, and his mission to limit women’s privacy and reproductive freedom at all costs,” said Montana Democratic Party Executive Director Sheila Hogan. “As for Zinke, Montanans know they can do better than a corrupt Congressman who spends more time in California hobnobbing with special interest groups than fighting for working Montanans.”
