With Montanans’ Health Care At Risk, Daines Says Supreme Court Vacancy is “Going to Help” Flailing Re-Election Campaign
Helena, MT – In an interview this week, Senator Steve Daines said, “the Supreme Court issue here is going to help” with his “tight” reelection race — a stark reminder that he is more focused on his political career than serving Montanans. These comments come as Daines is rushing to confirm President Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court — without even knowing who it is and having been adamantly opposed to the nomination of a new Supreme Court Justice in an election year in 2016.

Instead of passing desperately-needed pandemic relief for Montanas, Daines is supporting a shameless political power grab that could sabotage health care coverage. The oral arguments in the Supreme Court case to repeal the Affordable Care Act are scheduled for November 10th — one week after Election Day — and coverage protections for people with pre-existing conditions “may be doomed” if the law is overturned.

“For months, Steve Daines has dragged his feet on delivering desperately-needed pandemic relief for Montanans,” said MDP Communications Advisor Christina Wilkes. “But now that Daines has the chance to rush through a lifetime Supreme Court appointment that could lead to gutting protections for people with pre-existing conditions, he’s suddenly in a hurry. Montanans deserve better.”
