With Friends of Public Lands Like These, Who Needs Enemies?
Helena, MT – Yesterday, Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt – former lobbyist who reportedly “played a key role” in shrinking national monuments – tweeted in support of Senator Steve Daines, calling him a “terrific champion for conservation and restoration of public lands.”

Bernhardt’s authority on the subject is questionable to say the least, given his record of pushing to weaken environmental protections and for tapping William Perry Pendley – who has “argued for selling off almost all public lands” – as the acting director of the Bureau of Land Management. Yet Daines voted to confirm Bernhardt last year – despite vocal concerns from Montana’s conservationists.

“As Daines tries to make a cynical election-year pivot, it’s worth remembering that he has repeatedly fallen in line behind Trump’s anti-public lands appointees,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “Bernhardt’s praise is another reminder of Senator Daines’ loyalty to Washington insiders and special interests at the expense of Montanans.”
