What Montanans Are Saying About Dishonest Daines
Helena, MT – Montanans are fed up with Senator Steve Daines’ never-ending cycle of saying one thing to Montanans, then doing the opposite in Washington D.C.

From promising to protect people with pre-existing conditions after voting to gut the Affordable Care Act countless times to painting himself as tough on China despite his extensive history cozying up to Chinese officials – Daines has shown the people of Big Sky Country that his word means nothing, and they’ve caught on.

Here’s what Montanans have been saying:

Missoulian: Daines trying to gut health care
“As the parent of a little girl with a rare, life-threatening lung disease, I cringe when I see the TV ad Senator Daines is running claiming he will protect people with pre-existing conditions. It couldn’t be further from the truth. For years, Daines has been on the front lines of Washington’s efforts to gut health care for people with pre-existing conditions, including my daughter and 152,000 others here in Montana. For families like mine, it’s difficult to trust Senator Daines’ word on pre-existing conditions. Senator Daines voted repeatedly to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which prohibits insurance companies from hiking prices simply because of pre-existing conditions like the one my daughter has. Daines now supports a lawsuit looking to strike down the ACA in the courts.”

Montana Standard: “Daines has a spotty history on Medicaid expansion”
“The last thing our veterans should have to worry about after serving our country is whether they and their families will be able to afford healthcare. Most veterans receive their healthcare through the VA, but Medicaid expansion here in Montana has played a key role in making sure their families have access to affordable care as well. Unfortunately, our Senator Daines has a spotty history on Medicaid expansion. Just last month, he said that he will continue fighting to overturn the Affordable Care Act, the law that made Medicaid expansion possible. If Daines claims he supports our military members, he should stop trying to repeal the law that paved the path for coverage for veterans and their families.”

Missoulian: Daines’ “Denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions couldn’t come at a worse time”
“Now more than ever, because of COVID, you may acquire a pre-existing condition. Think about this outcome when you vote. Sen. Steve Daines has voted repeatedly to let insurance companies deny health coverage for pre-existing conditions. Wow. Denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions couldn’t come at a worse time. Removing coverage for pre-existing conditions is bad. Removing that protection in the aftermath of a pandemic when many will have additional conditions is worse. The confluence of doing so when there’s also a national recession and huge amount of personal financial losses is abhorrent. It would be really kicking people when they are down.”

Bozeman Daily Chronicle: Voters should not put up with Daines’ doublespeak
Steve Daines’ habit of promising one thing to Montanans, then voting differently in D.C., is tiresome. Daines repeatedly placates moderates while voting with his extreme base. Hopefully Montanans are catching onto his routine lies and hold him accountable for how he votes rather than what he says. A blatant example is his ad expressing strong support for health care insurance for Montanans while failing to mention Daines long-standing efforts in gutting the Affordable Care Act, stripping away health care for hundreds of thousands of Montanans with pre-existing conditions. Daines says he favors protecting your health care, your public lands and your public education—the reality is Daines doesn’t stand for these essential Montanan values at all. Daines lies and tries to continuously take credit for the hard work of our other senator. Montanans should not put up with Daines’ doublespeak any longer.”

Flathead Beacon: Daines supports lawsuit which would “rip health care coverage from the most vulnerable of our neighbors when they need it most”
“Sen. Steve Daines has often been critical of federal judges who “legislate from the bench,” in his words, but apparently legislating from the bench is perfectly acceptable as long as it suits his ideological goals. Daines recently expressed his support for a lawsuit currently before the Supreme Court that seeks to invalidate the entire Affordable Care Act. If the lawsuit were to succeed, Montana’s Medicaid expansion (which Daines has voted to undermine) and protections for 152,000 Montanans with a pre-existing condition could be lost. Of all the lawsuits Daines could be on board with in the middle of a global pandemic, he chooses the one that would rip health care coverage from the most vulnerable of our neighbors when they need it most. He didn’t get his wish to repeal the Affordable Care Act in Congress, so now he wants the Supreme Court to do his work for him.”

Bozeman Daily Chronicle: Daines is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, vote Bullock
“Daines recently changed the focus of his campaign toward how he will hold China accountable for COVID-19. The truth is that Daines enjoyed profitable commercial business ties to China when he lived there from 1992 until 1997. He represented Proctor and Gamble, who downsized its American workforce in 1993 by laying off 4,000 employees in the U.S. That is his real record of creating more jobs. He refuses to discuss these layoffs in public. China’s ambassador to the U.S. called Daines China’s “ambassador to Congress.” His policy positions are deceiving when he comes out as someone who is attacking China. Daines is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Bozeman Daily Chronicle: Daines awfully quiet recently about ties to China
“It seems that Sen. Steve Daines has gotten much quieter about his ties to China recently. It’s not hard to see this for what it is — another election year flip-flop from a senator getting quite good at flipping and flopping. Daines can try to scrub away his record of cozying up to China, but we won’t forget it this November. Here are the facts: Daines lived in China for six years helping a big corporation set up plants. He made five taxpayer-funded trips to China during his time in office and said our relationship with China is America’s ‘most important.’ And his praise has been reciprocated, with the Chinese ambassador to the U.S. calling Sen. Daines ‘China’s ambassador in Congress.’ Now that Daines finds these facts politically inconvenient, he’s quickly shifted to railing against ‘Chinese communist dictators’ and referring to the coronavirus as the ‘China virus’ in an attempt to paint over his record. […] It’s clear that we can’t count on Sen. Daines to put Montana first.”

Helena Independent Record: Daines not representing us
“We deserve representatives who work for us. Sen. Steve Daines clearly doesn’t, and all you have to do is look at his campaign donations to see why. Daines has taken more than $2 million from corporate special interest groups during his time in Congress. No wonder he’s put these companies above Montanans by voting repeatedly to gut protections for people with preexisting conditions. […] Montana deserves better than a senator who is bought and paid for. Let’s elect a senator this fall who is in our corner, not in the pockets of out-of-state corporations.
