What Montanans Are Saying About Dishonest Daines
Helena, MT – Across Big Sky Country, Montanans have caught onto Senator Steve Daines’ habit of saying one thing back home, then doing another in Washington D.C.
From promising to protect people with pre-existing conditions after voting to gut the Affordable Care Act countless times and fighting for public lands only when his political future is in jeopardy, to paying lip-service to being tough on China despite his extensive history as a “China Cheerleader” – Daines has shown time and time again that he stands for nothing.
Here’s what Montanans have been saying:
Missoula Current: Daines has a poor record on healthcare, running misleading ads
“The facts—which you can verify easily online—are that  Governor Bullock worked with both Democrats and Republicans to expand Medicaid coverage for almost 90,000 Montanans—almost one in ten of our family members, friends, and neighbors—and help save rural hospitals. He also signed bills to rein in the cost of prescription drugs. Meanwhile, Steve Daines has voted multiple times against affordable health care and coverage for pre-existing conditions. For example, in 2015, he supported a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act entirely, and repeal Medicaid expansion and premium subsidies in two years. [..] Montanans know that actions speak louder than words.”
Missoulian: Daines ‘relentless in his push to undermine protections for Montanans with pre-existing conditions’
“Senator Daines has been relentless in his push to undermine protections for Montanans with pre-existing conditions, even recently supporting a lawsuit to have the Affordable Care Act struck down. Chances are if you yourself are not one of the 152,000 Montanans with a pre-existing condition, you know someone who is. Steve Daines’ decisions in Washington to vote to sabotage access to affordable and quality healthcare affects every single one of us. It’s time we elect a Senator who fights for us and is not beholden to big special interests like Daines is.”
Billings Gazette: Dishonest Daines lying again
“Sen. Steve Daines is doing it again — lying. In his most recent TV ad Daines claims that our Gov. Steve Bullock would somehow shut down rural hospitals if elected to the Senate, that could not be further from the truth. […] If not for Bullock’s leadership many of the rural clinics that Montanans rely on, including the one I rely on, would have closed down. Bullock has been fighting for rural Montana and rural access to health care his whole career and he will continue to do so as our senator. Meanwhile Daines has voted time and time again to take health care away from tens of thousands of Montanans, deny protections for those with preexisting conditions, close down rural hospitals, and give pharmaceutical companies free reign to keep drug prices as high as they want. With a record like that, no wonder Daines feels like he has to lie about Bullock to win this election. Maybe if Daines had had a single townhall in his entire career in office he would know that Montanans are not as dumb as he thinks we are.”
Bozeman Daily Chronicle: Daines awfully quiet recently about ties to China
“It seems that Sen. Steve Daines has gotten much quieter about his ties to China recently. It’s not hard to see this for what it is — another election year flip-flop from a senator getting quite good at flipping and flopping. Daines can try to scrub away his record of cozying up to China, but we won’t forget it this November. Here are the facts: Daines lived in China for six years helping a big corporation set up plants. He made five taxpayer-funded trips to China during his time in office and said our relationship with China is America’s ‘most important.’ And his praise has been reciprocated, with the Chinese ambassador to the U.S. calling Sen. Daines ‘China’s ambassador in Congress.’ Now that Daines finds these facts politically inconvenient, he’s quickly shifted to railing against ‘Chinese communist dictators’ and referring to the coronavirus as the ‘China virus’ in an attempt to paint over his record. His messages represent classic fear-mongering, us versus them.”
Bozeman Daily Chronicle: Daines’ record clear that he is no conservationist
“Steve Daines claims he’s a conservationist. His record says otherwise. During his Senate term, Daines’ voting record on conservation issues has been one of the worst in Congress. He speaks of conserving public lands, only to support special interests in opposition. [..] He has not shown initiative or leadership on behalf of public lands and environmental conservation. His renewed support for fully funding the LWCF, comes now in the face of his re-election bid against opponent Gov. Steve Bullock, who demonstrates actions supporting conservation and public lands. Daines now applies the green shampoo treatment, to again appear to be a conservationist.”
Ravalli Republic:  Bullock supports rule of law
“Dismantling government agencies has led to corruption, pollution and rampant greed. Senator Daines evidently believes in this and in influence to get equitable treatment rather than the rule of law. In Montana our constitution guarantees clean air and clean water, and forbids outside or corporate money money in our elections. These were lessons learned the hard way, from influence of the Anaconda Copper Company and Montana Power. […] Daines’ support of the 2017 tax bill made me ill. His either absence from the Senate or support of the Trump chaotic agenda has helped to cripple this Senate and wither any legislative oversight of the Executive Branch.”
