Troy Downing Supports Overturning Protections for 152,000 Montanans With Pre-Existing Conditions
Downing Has Called for Outright Repeal of the Affordable Care Act
Helena, MT – In the midst of a public health and economic crisis, Republican candidate for State Auditor Troy Downing continues to support repealing the Affordable Care Act, which protects 152,000 Montanans with pre-existing conditions against insurance company discrimination, and insures more than 80,000 Montanans through Medicaid expansion. When discussing the ACA during his failed 2018 bid for U.S. Senate, Downing called it a “disaster” and said, “I would have been a proponent of not repeal or replace, but just repeal.”
During this COVID-19 pandemic, the quality, affordable health care offered by Medicaid expansion and the ACA is more vital than ever before. Medicaid expansion has been a lifeline for communities across Montana — by supporting thousands of jobs, expanding access to mental health and substance use disorder treatments, and helping rural hospitals stay afloat.
“Troy Downing’s attacks on Montanans with pre-existing conditions have always been out-of-touch — but in an unprecedented pandemic, they’re more dangerous than ever,” said MDP Communications Director Nathan Stein. “Montanans need a State Auditor who will fight their health care, not undermine it — Troy Downing doesn’t make the cut.”
