Troy Downing Supports Junk Insurance in a Pandemic

Helena, MT – As the COVID-19 pandemic stretches on, candidate for State Auditor Troy Downing continues to support junk insurance — despite the fact that the plans could “reject Montanans who have pre-existing health conditions.” Recently, a new report revealed that many consumers have been forced to pay for their own lifesaving treatment under short-term junk insurance plans, but Downing continues to consider them a viable option, calling them just “another tool in the tool box.”

Downing’s opposition to protections for Montanans with pre-existing conditions comes as no surprise, given that he supports repealing the Affordable Care Act, which protects 152,000 Montanans with pre-existing conditions against insurance company discrimination, and insures more than 80,000 Montanans through Medicaid expansion. When discussing the ACA during his failed 2018 bid for U.S. Senate, Downing called it a “disaster” and said, “I would have been a proponent of not repeal or replace, but just repeal.”

“Troy Downing’s support for junk insurance plans is totally disqualifying,” said MDP Communications Director Nathan Stein. “Montanans demand a state auditor who will hold insurance companies accountable, not support their predatory scams. Downing is grossly out of touch.”
