Throwback Thursday: Daines Voted Against Funding for the Butte Veterans Home – Then Tried to Take Credit For It

Helena, MT – Today, Governor Bullock is touring the Southwest Veterans Home in Butte – which he secured critical funding for by bringing Democrats and Republicans together. Meanwhile, Senator Steve Daines voted against funding for the home in 2018, but still showed up for the project’s groundbreaking to participate in the photo-op.

Montanans noticed Daines’ jaw-dropping hypocrisy – with one writing, “Senator Daines, you voted against the legislation that funds the Butte veterans home and other projects for veterans. How can I not come to the conclusion that you are a hypocrite and you must think Montanans are too dumb to see past your political posturing?”

In a recent ad for Governor Bullock’s Senate campaign, Montana veterans criticized Daines: He voted against it, and that was critical to a small state like this. He hasn’t backed many veterans issues. But then of course, when it came time to break ground he was the first to run up there and get his picture taken as if he did.”

While Daines voted against funding for the critical project for Montana veterans, he was quick to champion the Republican tax plan in 2017 that slashed taxes for his corporate donors and the wealthy, including himself – Daines personally secured a provision in the tax bill that saved him nearly $40,000 in 2017 alone.

“While Governor Bullock has been a tireless advocate for Montana’s veterans, Steve Daines only shows up to take credit,” said MDP Communications Advisor Christina Wilkes. “Instead, Daines is busy looking out for himself and his corporate donors – our veterans deserve better.”
