The MTGOP Is Trying To Distract You From Their Relentless War on Reproductive Rights

Abortion Access is More Popular in Montana than the GOP

Helena, MT – Following the release of a draft Majority Opinion of the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, Republican leaders in Montana released statements of condemnation. They were not, however, condemning the brutal reversal of half a century of established law, nor were they condemning the fact that three Justices who signed onto the brief had lied on the stand when asked, point blank, if they considered Roe v. Wade the law of the land.

Instead, Montana Republicans bemoaned the fact that the draft decision had been leaked. Governor Gianforte called the leak “shameful” and “an extraordinary breach.” Senator Steve Daines called the leak “reprehensible.” The Republican legislative leadership lambasted the “improperly leaked draft.” The Montana GOP complained that Senator Tester “still hasn’t condemned the leak.”

Why are they spending so much of their breath complaining about the leak? Because they need to distract Montanans from the fact that the decision is unpopular across Montana. According to the Pew Research center, 56% of Montanans support legal abortion, with a net support of 18%. Both Gianforte and Daines won their 2020 elections by a slimmer margin.

“The “leak” is pure Republican projection and distraction– they are trying to distract you from the fact that legal access to reproductive health care is more popular in Montana than they are,” says Sheila Hogan, executive director of the Montana Democratic Party. “Montana’s right to privacy is beloved and enshrined in our state constitution. It seems like Montana Democrats are the only ones left in the State willing to defend it.”
