Steve Daines Helping Trump Stiff Montana Communities for Rally Costs
Helena, MT – When Donald Trump made four trips across Montana in 2018 — in an unsuccessful effort to unseat U.S. Senator Jon Tester — he left Montana communities to pay the additional costs that come with the rallies. Missoula, Cascade, and Yellowstone counties sent reimbursements totaling $150,000.
According to an investigative report by the Center for Public Integrity, there’s no record of the Trump Campaign paying. The Federal Election Commission is meant to address this issue, but the agency hasn’t had a quorum since September of 2019, leaving the principal federal election watchdog toothless in advance of the 2020 election.
The Senate has a responsibility to appoint commissioners to the FEC — Senator Daines hasn’t lifted a finger to address this issue, instead opting to let his constituents continue to foot the bill.
“It’s absurd that Senator Daines is standing idly by as President Trump stiffs Montana taxpayers for costs incurred during partisan political rallies,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “Montanans deserve a Senator who will fight for us, not serve as accomplices to this robbery.”
