SHOT/CHASER: Daines’ Dark Money Allies Try to Hide His History as “China’s Ambassador in Congress”

Helena, MT –  This week, One Nation, a dark money group aligned with Mitch McConnell, released a new ad which attempted to gloss over Senator Steve Daines’ extensive history as “China’s ambassador in Congress.”

SHOT: “China lied to the world about coronavirus, costing lives and devastating our economy. Yet for too long we’ve relied on China for medicine and essential medical equipment. Senator Steve Daines is fighting for legislation to change that.”

CHASER: Just a few months ago, Daines praised the Chinese government’s response, saying it “aggressively worked to contain” the virus. These glowing comments came even as American intelligence officials were warning that China appeared to be minimizing the severity of the crisis.

SHOT: “It is time to bring that manufacturing back to the United States. Keep those jobs right here in the United States. That is, in our best interest for national security as well as our economy.”

CHASER: Daines is trying to depict himself as a champion of American jobs, yet he  voted for a tax plan that “could actually make it more attractive” for companies to ship jobs overseas. And in 2015, Daines voted against a Bring Jobs Home measure that sought to end tax breaks for companies that outsource jobs. Champion of keeping American jobs? Hardly.
