Shedding Light on Rosendale’s Shady Campaign Finance Record

Helena – Wealthy East Coast developer Matt Rosendale has long been opposed to getting rid of dark money groups in politics and having them disclose their secret donors.

As a proponent of dark money in politics, Rosendale voted in 2015 against the bipartisan Montana Disclose Act, which requires dark money groups to disclose their donors and campaign expenditures.

In 2013, Rosendale voted against the bipartisan TRACE Act (Transparency, Reporting and Accountability in Campaigns and Elections Act), which would require anonymous dark money political groups to disclose their donors. A Republican legislator who sponsored the bill said the TRACE Act was “all about following the money…we’re trying to level the playing field.”

In fact, Rosendale is endorsed by Citizens United, literally the group responsible for dark money in politics.

So it’s no surprise then that Rosendale praised as “positive” the Citizens United decision, which effectively eliminated the law Montanans passed to ban political spending by corporations and instead allows corporations and dark money groups to spend as much money as they want. The decision, of course means that Rosendale benefits from special interests like Steve Bannon’s PAC, the Club for Growth, and the controversial Senate Conservatives Fund pledging to pour money into his race.

That’s in addition to outsiders like John Bolton who’s said he’s going to spend $25 million across the country, Illinois billionaire Dick Uihlein who is willing to spend tens of millions of dollars to buy our elections and whose dark money group has already put $336,000 behind Rosendale, and the billionaire Koch Brothers, whose group has given Rosendale a perfect score.

Maryland Matt may not be aware of the history of Montana’s Copper Kings, who spent unlimited cash to buy seats for loyal allies who would do their bidding, but he’d do well to learn that Montanans don’t like outsiders and dark money groups corrupting our elections.
