Helena – In the primary alone, special interest groups funded by Illinois billionaire Dick Uihlein doled out $1.2 million in political ads in an attempt to buy a seat for wealthy East Coast developer Matt Rosendale. Since, they’ve already spent more than $300,000 to prop up his campaign.
Thanks to the disastrous Citizens United decision — which Rosendale praised as a “positive” — super PACs like those funded by Uihlein can give unlimited sums of money to influence elections. And the out-of-state megadonor has taken full advantage of that: Uihlein has spent $21 million this cycle on multiple Senate races, including Montana, and he has given at least $11 million since 2010 to Rosendale-backer Club for Growth.
Uihlein has also poured large sums into defeating labor union protections, bankrolling the organization that represented the lead plaintiff in Janus v. AFSCME, which dealt a massive blow to America’s public employees and labor unions.
Rosendale seems too busy catering to these outsiders and their dangerous agenda for Montanans to care that the only donors lining up to throw down for his feeble campaign are special interest dark money groups funded by out-of-state billionaires, not actual Montanans.
