Helena, MT – In recognition of the immense bravery of the United States Capitol Police who protected the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Congress today awarded four congressional gold medals to the United States Capitol Police. However, Rep. Matt Rosendale voted no on the bill to award these medals, joining only 20 other members of the House to withhold this honor.
In accepting the Medals, United States Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger described the attack: “It was a day unlike any other in our nation’s history. And for us, it was a day defined by chaos, courage, tragic loss and resolve.”
The Montana GOP has repeatedly failed to honor the U.S. Capitol Police force and their sacrifices on January 6th, 2021. Sen. Steve Daines and Rep. Matt Rosendale not only flamed the insurrection attempt by voting to throw out election results, but failed to sufficiently condemn the violence and investigate and hold perpetrators accountable. Governor Gianforte even went so far as to refuse a presidential request to lower the United States flags in honor of the police officers who died defending the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.
“The brave men and women who defended our nation’s Capitol and our democracy deserve our enduring gratitude,” says Sheila Hogan, executive director of the Montana Democratic Party. “For Rosendale to not only fan the flames of the attempted insurrection, but to then turn his back on the men and women who fought to keep him and his colleagues safe is unconscionable.”
