REMINDER: Rep. Rosendale and Sen. Daines Voted Against Saving Montana Pensions

Helena, MT – As President Biden announces a new American Rescue Plan rule today that will protect Montanans’ and millions of Americans’ pensions– particularly those in multi-employer pension plans who would otherwise have seen substantial cuts to their benefits – voters deserve to know that every Montana Republican in Congress voted against the fix.

“Republicans have pushed for a plan that could end the Social Security and Medicare guarantee, putting Montanans’ retirement in jeopardy. Democrats, on the other hand, believe you deserve the retirement benefits you have earned. It’s simple: Democrats are saving Montana’s pensions, Republicans could put your retirement at risk,” said Sheila Hogan, executive director of the Montana Democratic Party.

This new pension rule will protect more than 200 multi-employer plans that were on pace to become insolvent in the near future, which could have led to pension cuts for 2-3 million workers and retirees across the country. Thanks to President Biden and Democrats’ American Rescue Plan, pension funds that receive Special Financial Assistance are projected to remain solvent at least through 2051. Two to three million workers and retirees who would have faced dramatic cuts to their pensions will receive the benefits they paid into and depended on for their retirement security, and previous cuts to their pensions will be reversed.

Voting against this fix is not the only way Republicans have threatened to put Montanans’ retirement benefits at risk. The only plan put forward by Senate Republicans could put Montanans’ Social Security and Medicare benefits on the chopping block, impacting the 237,744 Montanans who rely on Medicare for their health coverage and 244,937 Montanans who receive Social Security benefits each month to help cover everything from rent to putting food on the table.
