No-Show Senator Daines Chooses Political Stunt over Lowering Costs for Montana Families
Daines refused to show up to Key Banking Committee Confirmation Hearing on Jerome Powell to lead the Federal Reserve
Helena, MT – Today, Montana Senator Steve Daines refused to show up to a critical vote to advance Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s confirmation to another term leading the U.S. Central Bank, as well as four other Federal Reserve nominees, in a coordinated effort among the Republicans on the Senate Banking Committee to block Montana’s economic recovery. The absence of Senator Daines and the other Republican members of the Committee denied the Committee quorum, preventing the vote from occurring.
By blocking the vote on the Fed Chairman, Senator Daines failed to do his constitutionally obligated duty as an elected official and intentionally sabotaged the Federal Reserve’s ability to address key issues facing Montanans like increasing inflation and rising prices.
“Today, Senator Daines proved he does not care about lowering costs for Montana’s working families, and instead is focused on holding Montana’s economic recovery hostage to try to score partisan points,” says Sheila Hogan, executive director of the Montana Democratic Party. “If Daines really cared about addressing inflation, helping small businesses, and boosting our economic recovery and employment, he’d show up to do his job.”
