Helena, MT – New Jersey multimillionaire Greg Gianforte has spent more than $2.5 million of his personal wealth running for governor, and he’s showing no sign of slowing down. After writing himself another $1 million check, Gianforte has now spent more than $12 million running for elected office in Montana.
As Gianforte pumps more money into his own campaign, Mike Cooney’s campaign is breaking grassroots fundraising records. This week, Cooney’s campaign announced that they raised more than $720,000 over the last two months, nearly doubling Gov. Bullock’s fundraising during his 2016 campaign over a similar period — despite limits that are almost three times lower than they were in 2016. More than half of Cooney’s contributions came from small, online donors, and 70% of Cooney’s donations came from Montanans.
“Greg Gianforte continues to spend his own money at a dizzying clip in a vain attempt to buy the Governor’s mansion,” said Deputy Communications Director Matt Fidel. “Gianforte has already spent $12 million running for office in Montana – and he’s prepared to spend more – but Mike Cooney has the grassroots support and momentum to power him to victory in November.”
