This latest self-loan comes as Gianforte continues to face intense scrutiny over his personal investments in companies that stand to profit from the COVID-19 pandemic. On May 8th – the same day Gianforte wrote his campaign another $500,000 check – his shares of pharmaceutical giants GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis, purchased on March 18th, were up 22% and 36%. His shares of the hydroxychloroquine manufacturer Sanofi, bought the next day, were up more than 22%.
“In Montana, votes are earned, not bought. Greg Gianforte can keep writing himself half-million dollar checks, but no amount of money can make Montanans forget how unlikable Greg Gianforte truly is. Just ask his fellow Republicans,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “Greg Gianforte is so out-of-touch, that he thinks sinking millions of dollars into his own campaign will resonate with Montana voters. He’s flat-out wrong.”
