Montana Democrats File Ethics Complaint Against SOS Candidate Christi Jacobsen

Helena, MT – The Montana Democratic Party today filed a formal ethics complaint with the Montana Commissioner of Political Practices against Secretary of State Candidate Christi Jacobsen.

Jacobsen, in an informational interview with KGVO regarding candidate filing procedures in her official capacity as Chief of Staff of the Secretary of State’s office, pivoted to her own campaign, where she expounded on her platform and announced that she had been endorsed by current Secretary of State Corey Stapleton.

The interview was conducted during regular work hours in Jacobsen’s capacity as a state employee. The Montana Code holds that state employees may not “use or permit the use of public time” to solicit support for the nomination of any person to public office. Jacobsen was a primary actor in a previous ethics violation, in which Stapleton sent out a press release announcing his candidacy on state letterhead.

“Christi Jacobsen’s inability to comply with basic election laws is totally disqualifying,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “Montanans expect the Secretary of State to uphold election integrity, not repeatedly violate it. Jacobsen has made it clear that she’s not up to the job.”
