Mike Cooney Announces Plan to Permanently Ban Statewide Sales Tax

Greg Gianforte Called a Statewide Sales Tax an “Ideal Solution”

Helena, MT – This morning, Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney and Rep. Casey Schreiner launched “Montanans Against a Sales Tax,” a proposed Constitutional Initiative to permanently ban a statewide sales tax in Montana, once and for all. Cooney’s plan is a direct rebuke to Greg Gianforte, who has called a statewide sales tax an “ideal solution” for Montana.

Mike Cooney’s record of opposing a statewide sales tax is clear. Cooney pledged to oppose a statewide sales tax more than 20 years ago, and he voted against every piece of legislation to impose a statewide sales tax during his time in the legislature.

On the other hand, Greg Gianforte testified in support of a bill to impose a statewide sales tax in Montana, which would have also conveniently slashed income taxes on millionaires like himself. Gianforte has shown no remorse for lying about his sales tax record. Just last month, Gianforte lied to a constituent, claiming, “I’ve never advocated for a sales tax.” After all, Greg Gianforte believes that “the fairest tax is the one you pay, and I don’t.”

“Thanks to Mike Cooney and Casey Schreiner’s leadership, Montanans will have an opportunity to permanently ban a statewide sales tax, once and for all,” said MDP Deputy Communications Director Matt Fidel. “While Greg Gianforte mourns the fact that his ‘ideal solution’ may be permanently banned, working families can rest assured that Mike Cooney will lead the charge to ban a sales tax in Montana, forever.”
