However, the reality is that Daines refused to co-sponsor the Yellowstone Gateway Protection Act for more than a year and a half despite overwhelming public support,
Daines held out his support in hopes that his stalling tactics would help him gain support for his top-down push to strip protections from hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands in Montana. Montanans slammed Daines, saying he was “out of touch” and failing to hear their voices on the issue. Only after months of public pressure – and when it became clear the bill would become law with or without him – did Daines finally give in and offer his reluctant support for the Yellowstone Gateway Protection Act.
“In an attempt to erase his voting record, Steve Daines is brazenly misrepresenting his history of playing politics with Montana’s public lands,” said MDP Communications Advisor Christina Wilkes. “Daines cares about himself and his reelection, not Montanans and their right to public lands. Come November, Big Sky Country will elect a new Senator who fights for their way all of life all the time, not just during election season.”
