In a Pandemic, Gianforte Calls to End Medicaid Expansion, Protections for Montanans With Pre-Existing Conditions

Gianforte Confirms His Desire to Rip Health Care Away From Thousands of Montanans, Despite Claims to the Contrary

Helena, MT – Yesterday, Rep. Greg Gianforte confirmed what has long been known to be true. Greg Gianforte wants to end Montana’s Medicaid expansion and strip protections away from Montanans with pre-existing conditions.

According to the Helena IRGianforte still wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), even in the middle of a pandemic. Montana’s Medicaid expansion is only possible because of the ACA – without the ACA, 112,000 Montanans would lose their health insurance and Montanans with pre-existing conditions would once again be vulnerable to insurance company discrimination.

Gianforte knows this all too well. He’s called Montana’s Medicaid expansion “a disaster,” and pledged to dismantle the ACA “piece by piece.” Last year, Congressman Greg Gianforte voted against directing the House of Representatives’ counsel to oppose the Republican lawsuit to overturn the ACA, which is in front of the Supreme Court right now. Just this week, Gianforte voted against a bill to expand tax credits for health insurance premiums, boost Medicaid expansion, and drive down the price of prescription drugs.

“Greg Gianforte’s plan for Montanans health care is simple – rip health coverage away and eliminate protections for Montanans with pre-existing conditions,” said MDP Deputy Communications Director Matt Fidel. “No wonder Greg Gianforte tries to hide behind his $184 million fortune as much as possible. It just doesn’t get more out-of-touch than trying to strip health insurance away during a pandemic.”
