ICYMI: Troy Downing Accused of Threatening to Kill His Ex-Wife

Chilling Story Reveals Previously Unreported Court Records, Blog Posts

Helena, MT – New reporting reveals a damning account of Troy Downing’s misogyny, threats towards his ex-wife, and attempts to shirk his child support obligations. The article details disturbing comments made by Downing, including a threat to kill his ex-wife with their children present, as well as Downing’s attempts to avoid paying child support while living in his $2 million San Diego mansion.

Downing’s ex-wife recounts a chilling incident in sworn court records:

As I passed by him to enter he said “I’m gonna kill you; maybe tonight”. I proceeded to say goodnight to the kids with Troy looking on the entire time. When I told my daughter [REDACTED BY MONTANA POST] that I would come to the house in the morning to walk to school with them Troy sarcastically said, “If she can,” hinting at the fact that he may indeed hurt me. Terrified for my life, I went back to my parents house and told them what had happened. They were afraid too, knowing that Troy kept several firearms in a safe and was a skilled hunter.

The article further states that Downing claimed that he could not pay increased child support, telling a California court that his monthly income was only $2,000/month while living in a mansion. An independent auditor appointed by the court determined that his monthly income was ten times what he claimed, and ordered him to pay $2,894 in child support each month.

These damning revelations come after Downing has repeatedly professed support for eliminating Montana’s gender neutral protections in insurance, and shows no signs of changing his support for ripping away healthcare from people with preexisting conditions with no replacement or plan in place.

They also add to an extensive record of skirting Montana law over the course of his brief time in the state. Downing has received criticism for his California residency and his guilty plea in acquiring in-state resident hunting licenses without in-state residency. Downing’s campaign has been plagued by campaign fairness violations — a pattern of disregard and illegality that definitively shows that Montanans cannot trust Troy Downing.

Montana Post: State Auditor Candidate Troy Downing Accused of Threatening to Kill His Ex Wife, Tried to Shirk Child Support Obligations
By: Don Pogreba

In 2005, Troy Downing was accused of threatening to kill his ex-wife during an acrimonious separation and divorce, and in 2008, he claimed that he could not pay increased child support, telling a California court that his monthly income was only $2,000/month while living in a mansion.

Court records from California show that Downing’s ex-wife returned to a California court two years after their divorce, claiming that Downing had taken advantage of her lack of education to force her to sign a divorce agreement. During that proceeding, she made a sworn statement that Downing had threatened to kill her:

TROY intimidated me into signing the agreement by vowing that he would fight me tooth and nail in court and that he would win on all issues, including receiving most of the marital property. I really did not know what I was signing when TROY asked me to sign the agreement he prepared. I am a high school graduate. I did not attended college. I had never bene divorced before….

His ex-wife continues to describe a scene when she returned to the house she had shared with Downing, intending to put on their children to bed:

Troy was livid and did not want to let me into the house.

As you may recall from his bid for the U.S. Senate in 2009, Downing maintained a personal blog called “Troy’s World-Random Rants and Related Run-On Retarded Rhetoric.” In one post from 2009, he, after opening the piece with a joke about Karen Carpenter’s death from anorexia, called his ex-wife a combination “between and anorexic, the Gollum, and Skeletor”:

In 2008, Downing tried to prevent an increase in his child support payments, telling the Court that his monthly income was only $2,000 and his monthly expenses were $14,550.

In his statement to the court, Downing claimed that his investments were a mess, and he could not pay an increase in child support:

On Page 2, line 19 of Mr. Annis’ report, he speculates that I am “substantially invading and liquidating assets”. This is exactly how I have been supporting my family for the last several years. As I struggled to plan for the future, liquidating assets and generating debt, I knew that this was not sustainable, so, I made a decision to go into real estate to generate income. In retrospect, I see it was a very difficult time to move into a troubled and distressed business as I have seen the value of my real estate holdings free fall, the availability of debt facilities dwindle, and the ability to generate current cash flow all but disappear.

While Downing was pleading about his child support payments, he was not exactly living in poverty. In 2005, he purchased the 5 bedroom, 6-bath, 6,000 square foot mansion and vineyard in Fallbrook, California for just under $2 million, a home he owned until selling it for a loss in 2019.

A Special Master appointed by the Court determined that his monthly income was ten times what he claimed and ordered him to pay $2,894 in child support each month.

During his very brief time in Montana politics, Troy Downing has repeatedly shown questionable judgment: he’s broken Montana hunting laws, called Fish, Wildlife, and Parks officers part of a “deep state conspiracy” to take him down, touted the endorsement of Michael Flynn, claimed California resident tax breaks while living in Montana, and repeatedly broken Montana campaign finance laws.

I certainly understand that divorces are complicated and emotional affairs, but in the context of his demonstrated misogyny, this latest set of revelations about Downing’s past is another reason to question his fitness to lead the Auditor’s office.

Montana can do better.
