ICYMI: Thanks to Fellow Mega-Millionaire Gianforte, Daines Has Taken Thousands in Luxury Jet Travel [Montana Post]

Daines, Gianforte Have Championed GOP Tax Bill Which Slashed Taxes on Private Jet Travel

Helena, MT – A new report reveals that Senator Steve Daines has taken thousands of dollars “in luxury private flights…from his former business partner and current gubernatorial candidate, Greg Gianforte.” If that wasn’t out-of-touch enough, Daines and Gianforte championed the tax bill that contained “a massive tax cut for private jets that benefited themselves while hurting Montanans.”

Throughout their careers in Washington, Daines and Gianforte have fought for corporate interests and the ultra-wealthy – like themselves – not Montanans. Simply put: “They’re not from Montana, and they’re not for Montana.”

Montana Post: Man of the People Steve Daines Has Taken $17,000 in Luxury Jet Travel from Greg Gianforte
By: Don Pogreba

“Between 2017 and 2019, Senator Steve Daines has taken almost $17,000 in luxury private flights between Washington D.C. and Montana from his former business partner and current gubernatorial candidate, Greg Gianforte. And both men voted for a massive tax cut for private jets that benefited themselves while hurting Montanans.

Financial disclosure reports filed with the U.S. Senate show that Daines has taken 11 flights on Air Gianforte on a luxury jet valued at $9 million in 2010 but can be had for the low, low price of $7,950,000.

The flights range from a claimed value of $262.50 for a round trip flight between Bozeman and Missoula in August of 2017 to $8,750.00 for an October flight from Washington to Bozeman so that Daines could stay in D.C. to vote for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

There are a lot of reasons to turn a skeptical eye to these flights. The first is the absurdity of how Daines and Gianforte depict themselves as ordinary Montanans while flying around and to the state in a luxury jet.

The second is that, in any other case, we’d turn a very critical look to a Senator accepting hugely discounted rates on luxury jet travel from a business partner. Will Gianforte continue to offer this service to Daines if Daines is re-elected to the Senate next year?

But the worst of it is that Daines and Gianforte voted in 2017 for a massive tax break for private jet owners that not only let them write off 100% of the cost of a new jet but also cut the taxes and fees they pay to fund air-traffic control and other flight operations.

America’s rules are loopier still. Donald Trump’s tax reform allowed individuals and companies to write off 100% of the cost of a new or used private jet against their federal taxes. For some plutocrats this has wiped out an entire year’s tax bill. For others, it has made buying a jet extraordinarily cheap.

So when Senator Daines was taking a flight on Air Gianforte to the Bozeman, Colstrip, and Glasgow airports, neither man was paying the same kinds of taxes and fees you and I pay when we fly, the fees that make air travel possible.

Daines and Gianforte are desperate to have Montanans forget that they are not only plutocrats but the kind of swamp creatures who write tax cuts for their luxury jet travel while they refuse to vote for needed infrastructure in our communities.

That’s who they are. They’re not from Montana, and they’re not for Montana.”
