GOP Civil War: Gianforte Surrogate Accuses Primary Opponent Of Breaking Promise to Drop Out

Helena, MT – One of Greg Gianforte’s most prominent supporters is publicly criticizing his primary opponent for allegedly breaking a promise to step aside for Montana’s lone Congressman, guaranteeing that the already nasty Republican gubernatorial primary will only become more hostile, three weeks out from election day.

In a Facebook post, Rep. Kerry White accused one of Greg Gianforte’s primary opponents of “going back against his word” by not dropping out of the governor’s race after Gianforte entered. Gianforte’s candidacy has already created massive fractures within the Montana Republican Party – this latest attack from Gianforte’s camp raises serious questions as to his ability to bring his party back together should he emerge as the nominee in June.

In recent weeks, fellow Republicans have accused Gianforte of committing insider tradingprofiteering off of the COVID-19 pandemic, and exploiting a competitor’s cancer diagnosis to steal supporters away, which MTPR called “slimy campaign tactics.” This latest swipe by Gianforte’s allies will further divide the Republican party, as they seek to unite behind a nominee in just a few short weeks.

“Greg Gianforte has plowed over $1 million into his own campaign, but even his fellow Republicans can’t disguise their distaste for Gianforte and his out-of-touch values,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “As the Republican primary continues to descend into chaos, Democrats stand more ready than ever to defeat Gianforte and his slimy brand of politics this November.”
