“[Gianforte] Will Eliminate This Union And Privatize Montana Education as His First And Second Orders of Business in The State Legislature”
“For the first time in Montana’s history we have a governor’s race that will determine whether or not this union actually exists,” says President of Montana’s largest union

Helena, MT – In a recent interview, newly elected president of the Montana Federation of Public Employees (MFPE) Amanda Curtis pulled no punches when describing the future of workers’ rights and public education in Montana under a Gianforte/Juras administration. Curtis warned, “For the first time in Montana’s history we have a governor’s race that will determine whether or not this union actually exists… [Gianforte], I believe, will eliminate this union and privatize Montana education as his first and second orders of business in the state legislature.”

A Greg Gianforte governorship poses such a unique threat to workers’ rights in Montana, MFPE members voted to unanimously condemn his candidacy, a first for the union. Gianforte is also a vocal proponent of privatizing public education – he has called public schools a “monopoly,” and donated over $12 million to Petra Academy, a private, Christian school in Bozeman that discriminated against children with special needs. Gianforte is even supporting a Supreme Court case – Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue – that public education advocates have described as “a blatant affront to democracy” which would cause “a virtual earthquake in public education.” As Curtis cautioned, “We’ve seen situations in other states where the most extreme example of the far right gets elected.”

“Any independent observer should pay close attention to the dire warnings coming from Montana’s labor movement about Greg Gianforte,” said MDP Deputy Communications Director Matt Fidel. “A Gianforte/Juras administration would try to strangle Montana unions and privatize Montana public education. For teachers and students alike – the stakes couldn’t be higher this November.”
