Greg Gianforte has been an opponent of public lands for decades. In 2009, he infamously sued the state of Montana to block access to a local fishing hole near one of his several properties. Gianforte supports transferring management of federal land and opposes buying any new land for state parks or fishing access sites. In Congress, Gianforte wrote legislation to strip protections from nearly 700,000 acres of public lands — without public input — a move described by conservation advocates as potentially “the single biggest rollback of protected public lands in Montana history.”
“Greg Gianforte despises public lands so much that he continues to double down on opposing federal funding to protect our public lands — in spite of overwhelming, bipartisan support from Montanans,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “Greg Gianforte is so ideologically opposed to public lands, that he refuses to place Montanans above his selfish desire to privatize Montana’s heritage.”
