Public lands advocates say that Pendley has “spent his entire career advocating for the sale and transfer of our federal public lands.” Pendley has overseen the opening of “more acres of public land for oil and gas leasing in one year than any other administration,” and he released a regional management plan in Montana “that allows for oil and gas drilling on 91% of the lands covered by the plan.”
Steve Daines said he had “not found a reason to be against” Pendley’s nomination. Greg Gianforte – who infamously sued the state of Montana to block access to a popular fishing hole – has also refused to condemn Pendley, despite boasting a close relationship with members of the Administration.
“Hunters, anglers, and conservationists are united in opposition to William Perry Pendley, ” said MDP Deputy Communications Director Matt Fidel. “If Gianforte and Daines cared about Montanans’ access to public lands, they would be too. Montanans deserve leaders who will stand up for our public lands, not just look out for themselves.”
