Gianforte and Daines Vote to Continue Government Shutdown, Against Funding Community Health Centers

Helena—Early this morning, Congressman Greg Gianforte and Senator Steve Daines voted to continue a government shutdown and deprive funding for more than 40 of Montana’s community health centers, our nation’s military, and a four year extension of the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

However, three weeks ago, both were singing the importance of avoiding a government shutdown.

Gianforte said at the time“A shutdown would stop funding for programs for our troops and veterans, jeopardize the health care of Montana children, and allow garbage to pile up in our national parks… I didn’t come to Washington to shut down the government.”

Afterward, Daines commented“It was pointless to shut the government down.

Meanwhile, just three days ago both Gianforte and Daines spoke at a press conference to stress the importance of funding care for the more than 100,000 Montanans who rely on community health centers. But today they voted against that funding.

Gianforte and Daines claim their objections are because the price tag of the budget would add to our national debt. But the deficit didn’t seem to be a problem in December when both Gianforte and Daines voted for an unpaid-for $2.2 trillion tax giveaway to multimillionaires like them.

“Millionaires Greg Gianforte and Steve Daines don’t have any problem with $2.2 trillion in debt, as long as it is in the service of giving the ultra-rich like them a tax cut,” said Nancy Keenan, Executive Director of the Montana Democratic Party. “But when it comes to funding health care for 100,000 Montanans, extending CHIP, or paying our military service members, they suddenly can’t stomach it.  Gianforte and Daines are the worst kinds of Washington politicians, and their fiscal irresponsibility and deficit crocodile tears prove it.”
