Helena, MT – This morning, in the case of June Medical Services LLC v. Russo, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a Louisiana law designed to restrict a woman’s right to reproductive health care. Greg Gianforte and Steve Daines – both staunch advocates for radical anti-choice policies – filed an amicus brief in support of the Louisiana law, which called for Roe v. Wade to be “reconsidered.” And in addition to his full-throated opposition to women’s health care, Greg Gianforte has donated more than $3.6 million to anti-choice groups and crisis pregnancy centers.
While the Court ruled these types of measures to be unconstitutional, Montanans can expect Greg Gianforte and Steve Daines to continue their pursuit of similarly restrictive legislation for Montanans if elected this November.
Over the last few years, Montana Republicans have tried to pass several reproductive freedom restrictions, forcing the Bullock/Cooney administration to veto several of the measures. Greg Gianforte and Steve Daines – who are committed to restricting women’s access to reproductive health care, even in cases of rape and incest – would almost certainly prefer to see those bills signed into law. Montanans’ access to reproductive health care is already severely limited – out of 56 Montana counties, 93% do not have an abortion provider, and 55% of Montana women live in those counties. As Governor, Gianforte would insert government into women’s most personal health care decisions. If re-elected to the Senate, Daines will continue his crusade to restrict women’s access to reproductive health care.
“Today, Greg Gianforte and Steve Daines suffered a setback to their thinly veiled agenda of putting the government between a woman and her doctor,” said MDP Deputy Communications Director Matt Fidel. “All Montanans should have the freedom to make their own decisions about their bodies. Gianforte and Daines want to roll the clock back on women’s rights – Montanans won’t let them.”
