Helena—Yesterday, National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Rep. Steve Stivers said that in order to pay for the Republican tax scam that slashed taxes formillionaire Republican donors: “I do think we need to deal with our some of our spending. We’ve got to try to figure out how to spend less.”
When asked to clarify if he was referring to entitlement programs, Stivers conceded that he meant Medicare and Social Security.
As NRCC Chair, Stivers is in charge of supporting endangered incumbents like multimillionaire Greg Gianforte. Stivers even donated directly to Gianforte. So, according to the logic used by the Gianforte campaign to falsely attack Kathleen Williams on immigration in their first TV ad, because Stivers supports Gianforte, Gianforte must be the candidate of cutting Social Security and Medicare.
But we don’t need false logic to know that Gianforte doesn’t support Social Security or Medicare.
Gianforte believes Montana seniors have an “obligation to work” because “retirement is not biblical.” Comparing older Montanans to Noah, he explained, “How old was Noah when he built the ark? 600. He wasn’t like, cashing Social Security checks, he wasn’t hanging out, he was working.”
And on Medicare, Gianforte has been silent. In addition to Stivers, House Speaker Paul Ryan has also proposed cutting Medicare to pay for the massive tax giveaway to millionaires and corporations. But when asked if he agrees with the leader of his party in the House, Gianforte refused to answer.
Gianforte needs to explain to Montanans once and for all if he supports cutting Social Security and Medicare to pay for his tax scam that added $1.9 trillion to the deficit. Does he stand with his Washington DC party bosses or with Montana?
