Fueled by Grassroots Donors, Cooney Announces Record Breaking Haul, While Greg Gianforte Pours Personal Millions Into His Own Campaign
Gianforte has spent more than $11 million to prop up his own political ambitions
Helena, MT – As reported by the Associated PressLt. Gov. Mike Cooney announced that his campaign raised more than $720,000 over the last two months, nearly doubling Gov. Bullock’s fundraising during his 2016 campaign over a similar period — despite limits that are almost three times lower than they were in 2016. More than half of Cooney’s contributions came from small, online donors, and 70% of Cooney’s donations came from Montanans.

Meanwhile, Greg Gianforte – a multimillionaire from New Jersey – continues to dump his own money into his campaign to buy the governor’s mansion. After earning $184 million over the last 10 years, Greg Gianforte has spent more than $11 million of his personal wealth running for office in Montana. Alternatively, Mike Cooney has spent $0 of his own money on his gubernatorial campaign.

Besides Gianforte’s willingness to pour millions of his personal wealth into the campaign, he’s faced scrutiny over other fundraising practices as well. At the moment, Gianforte’s campaign is under active investigation by the COPP for alleged coordination between his campaign and a dark money SuperPAC.

“Montanans across the state are rallying behind Mike Cooney’s campaign to defend and expand access to pristine public lands, affordable health care, and quality public education,” said MDP Deputy Communications Director Matt Fidel. “Gianforte may spend millions propping up his selfish political ambitions, but no amount of money can erase his support for a statewide sales tax, blocking public land access, or stripping away health care in a pandemic.”
