Helena—Today is the 83rd Anniversary of the creation of Social Security, the bedrock safety net that ensures older Montanans receive the benefits they were promised and have earned over a lifetime of hard work.
Unfortunately, multimillionaire Congressman Greg Gianforte believes Montana seniors have an “obligation to work” because “retirement is not biblical.” While speaking at the Montana Bible College in 2015, Gianforte explained:
“There’s nothing in the Bible that talks about retirement…The example I think of is Noah. How old was Noah when he built the ark? 600. He wasn’t like, cashing Social Security checks, he wasn’t hanging out, he was working. So, I think we have an obligation to work. The role we have in work may change over time, but the concept of retirement is not biblical.”
And that’s not the only bad news for Montana seniors. Gianforte refuses to say whether he opposes Speaker Paul Ryan’s plan to gut Medicare in order to pay for the massive tax cuts for corporations and millionaires passed into law last year.
Older Montanans deserve a leader who will stand up for their benefits, not one who derides them for “cashing Social Security checks” they have earned.
