“Public lands are part of our way of life in Montana. That’s why I’m supporting Senator Daines.”
FACT CHECK: Daines has an extensive history of playing politics with public lands, notably spearheading an effort to strip protections from hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands and supporting extremist appointees fighting to undermine the Montana way of life, including “sworn enemy to public lands” William Perry Pendley to lead the Bureau of Land Management.
“Senator Daines has been a real champion for conservation issues in Montana. Like all Montanans, he values access to public lands.”
FACT CHECK: Daines’ support for the GAOA is nothing more than an election year charade – he has previously opposed permanent reauthorization of LWCF, and has voted to pull back millions from the program. In 2017, Daines sided with wealthy landowners, several of whom had donated to him, fighting to limit public access to the Crazy Mountains in their effort to remove a district forest ranger who worked to protect public access to the region.
“His willingness to reach across the aisle and get the Great American Outdoors Act signed into law will provide access to public plans for generations to come. Thanks to Senator Daines, Congress is finally getting the job done.”
FACT CHECK: During his time in Washington D.C., Daines has served as a loyal footsoldier to party leaders, voting with Mitch McConnell nearly 95% of the time. He has also been criticized for “hold[ing] up” and refusing to support bipartisan conservation measures with broad support in Montana including the Yellowstone Gateway Protection Act and the Blackfoot Clearwater Protection Act.
Steve Daines, a champion for public lands? Not so much. Montanans deserve a Senator who will fight for their way of life all of the time, not just when it’s politically convenient.
