Even During Public Health Crisis, Daines Committed to Ripping Away Montanans’ Health Care

Helena, MT – Millions of Americans – including thousands of Montanans – have lost their jobs and health insurance in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. Many Montanans are confronting the anxiety of going without coverage during this uncertain time. The response from Senator Steve Daines and his Republican colleagues in Washington? No plans to act, other than plowing ahead with their cruel efforts to sabotage the Affordable Care Act.

The ACA has been a lifeline for thousands in Montana – it paved the way for Medicaid expansion, which now covers more than 80,000 Montanans, provides expanded access to mental health and substance use disorder treatments, and bolsters rural hospitals.

If Daines got his wish of repealing the ACA, 112,000 Montanans would have their health coverage ripped away and 152,000 Montanans with pre-existing conditions would become vulnerable again to insurance company discrimination – all in the middle of a pandemic.

“If Steve Daines had his way, thousands of Montanans would get thrown off their health insurance during a global public health crisis,” said MDP Executive Director Sandi Luckey. “Instead of fighting to protect his constituents’ health care coverage and protections for those with pre-existing conditions, Daines is busy looking out for his insurance and pharmaceutical industry donors. Montanans deserve better.”
